Rwanda is the most densely populated country in Africa, with 300 people per square kilometre – most of whom live in rural areas. Agriculture is a dominant economic activity, and agricultural development is considered key to growth and reducing poverty in the country. Around 46% of the land in Rwanda is cultivated, and it is thought that up to 23% more could also be used to grow crops.
Since beginning work in Rwanda in 2006 Plantwise has launched 65 plant clinics, and the initiative has been enthusiastically adopted by national institutions including the Rwanda Agriculture Board, the Ministry of Agriculture and local government.
