Agriculture contributes about 33% of Nepal’s total gross domestic product (GDP), and the livelihood of around two thirds of the population depends on it. However, farmers in most parts of the country are still only just getting by, and a very limited amount of technical advice is available to them.

Supported by Plantwise, the first two pilot plant health clinics were held in marketplaces – known as haat bazaars – in Besishahar and Sundarbazar, Lamjung District. Since 2009 the network of clinics has developed fast, with farmers asking most often for advice on problems associated with fungi and insect pests. Initially a few clinics were run with the support of HiCAST and SECARD. The current clinics are endorsed by the government of Nepal, and have been integrated into its national plant protection programme.
