As it now stands, the situation for farmers in Myanmar is an urgent one. “The agricultural sector is the back bone of Myanmar’s economy as the entire agricultural sector contributes 30% of its current GDP,” according to former Agricultural Minister Myint Hlaing. “In addition, 61% of the country’s labor force is working in the agricultural sector.”
After successfully piloting Plantwise in Myanmar in 2015 and 2016, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation (MOALI) developed a Plant Health System Strategy, based on the Plantwise approach, with support from in-country Plantwise partners and CABI. This strategy was designed to be in line with the Myanmar ‘National Strategic Framework for Rural Development’ and was officially launched in October 2017.
